One thing about me, I love a little back and forth! Honey and Spice by Bolu Babalola is a Black British romance about university student Kiki who has her own podcast called Brown Sugar that basically preaches on the varying levels of trash, men can be. Insert the too charming Malakai ‘the newest player in town’ and you have your typical enemies to lovers romance.

The petty little arguments, the banter, just the overall chemistry between Kiki and Malakai is EVERYTHING. I should also mention Malakai is described to look like a young Morris Chestnut… I was sold. Their relationship was definitely unique and I really enjoyed the conversations about love and relationship dynamics they had on her podcast, it was incredibly well written, Bolu did her thing. 

The characters aren’t perfect though, Kiki was a pain in my ass for a lot of it, she came across real angry at times, even bitter and honestly don’t think it was necessary. On top of this, I think the ending was a bit corny, it was definitely something straight out of a low budget film and I could’ve done without it. Something simple for the ending that was more fitting of the characters’ personalities would’ve been better received in my opinion. There were a few storylines that were left unfinished or weren’t delved into deeply enough, but despite all of this, the book was very refreshing, entertaining and had me laughing out loud a number of times! If a book can get me to laugh out loud it’s automatically good with me, so I would definitely recommend Honey and Spice!
